Description AHA  HeartCode ACLS is a self-directed, comprehensive eLearning program that uses eSimulation technology to allow students to assess and treat patients in virtual healthcare settings. To enter the course, students must complete a precourse self-assessment. Students will then be presented with a team dynamics lesson and 10 In-hospital patient cases, including a BLS case and 2 megacode cases. The cases may be repeated as many times as necessary to pass. Upon successful completion of all the patient cases, students will take a multiple choice exam and must pass with a minimum score of 84%. Skills sessions must completed within 90 days of the completion of the online course. You can find your completion date printed on your completion certificate.

Who Should Take This Course?  AHA HeartCode ACLS is for healthcare professionals and others seeking an alternative delivery method for completing ACLS training.  This course is designed for healthcare providers who need ACLS for their clinical duties. This group of professionals includes physicians, nurses, paramedics, respiratory therapists, pharmacists and others as required by their employer.

Course Content

  • Apply the BLS, Primary, and Secondary Assessments sequence for a systematic evaluation of adult patients
  • Perform prompt, high-quality BLS, including prioritizing early chest compressions and integrating early AED use
  • Recognize and perform early management of respiratory arrest
  • Discuss early recognition and management of ACS and stroke, including appropriate disposition
  • Recognize and perform early management of bradyarrhythmias and tachyarrhythmias that may result in cardiac arrest or complicate resuscitation outcome
  • Recognize and perform early management of cardiac arrest until termination of resuscitation or transfer of care, including immediate post–cardiac arrest care
  • Model effective communication as a member or leader of a high-performance team
  • Evaluate resuscitative efforts during a cardiac arrest through continuous assessment of CPR quality, monitoring the patient’s physiologic response, and delivering real-time feedback to the team
  • Recognize the impact of team dynamics on overall team performance
  • Discuss how the use of a rapid response team or medical emergency team may improve patient outcomes
  • Define systems of care

Required Student Materials  All student content is contained within theAHA HeartCode ACLS online portion, so no additional student materials are needed. A variety of additional videos, as well as the ACLS Provider Manual and the 2020 Handbook of Emergency Cardiovascular Care are included to enhance learning and facilitate successful completion of the patient cases. Skills sessions must completed within 90 days of the completion of the online course. You can find your completion date printed on your completion certificate.

Course Format and Exam Before taking the ACLS course, students must pass the online ACLS Precourse Self-Assessment with a score of 70% or higher. This test is part of the ACLS student Website (access granted with purchase of HeartCode ACLS).  After successful completion of the online ACLS Precourse Self-Assessment, students continue to (Part 1)HeartCode ACLS, which is the online portion of the ACLS course when taken in a blended-learning format. This course uses a variety of eLearning assets — such as dramatizations, eSimulations, animations, self-directed learning, and interactive activities — to teach students BLS knowledge and skills. The online program includes eSimulations and other interactive activities, and allows students to choose between in-facility and prehospital tracks to best meet their learning needs. PC and Mac® compatible. After completing the online portion, students must pass the online exam with a score of 84% or higher. (Part 2) After completion of the online portion, students attend a structured Instructor-led classroom session that focuses on meaningful skills practice, debriefing, team scenarios, discussions of local protocols, and skills testing(Where available, students may also complete the hands-on portion with a voice-assisted manikin.)

Continuing Education Credits  EMS Professionals requiring continuing education credits, must submit a written request within 60 days of course completion. The AHA offers continuing medical education (CME) or continuing education (CE) credits for some of its CPR and ECC courses, and CME/CE may also be offered for live events.  Learn more>

Course Completion Card Students receive the American Heart Association ACLS Provider eCard, valid for two years.  AHA cards will be processed as eCards, and usually received within 48 hours following the class.  Students can expect to receive an email from ecards@heart.org or noreply@heart.org, with a link to claim their eCard. BLS Renewal  If you are taking an ACLS class, ACLS Update or an ACLS skills session, you are also eligible to take a BLS skills session, on the same day, at a discounted rate of $30. You must first complete BLS Heartcode in order to take advantage of the discounted BLS skills session
