Description  The American Heart Association(AHA) BLS Instructor Essentials Course is a 3 part course that is designed to prepare instructor candidates on how to deliver the AHA BLS and Heartsaver courses in both the Traditional Instructor led and Blended Learning formats. This course educates instructor candidates on how to adequately use AHA Instructor teaching materials, ensure that students meet learning objectives, offer student coaching skills, provide an objective skills performance evaluation, and follow AHA Instructor and course policies.The course covers core content and discipline-specific content required to teach AHA courses.

Who Should Take This Course?  This course can be completed by any candidates who wish to become AHA BLS Instructors. All potential instructor candidates must have a current AHA BLS provider certification to take the BLS instructor course.

  • BLS Instructor Essentials (Online Learning Course)
  • Heartsaver Instructor Essentials (Online Learning Course)
  • In person Classroom course with Instructor educator
  • Course Monitoring by Licensed Instructor

Required Student Materials
Prior to taking this course, candidates must have a current BLS Provider course completion card.  Citywide CPR provides each student with the following:

  • Instructor Candidate Application
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) Instructor Essentials Online Course Item: 15-1420
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) Instructor Manual Item: 15-1009

Course Format and Exam  Part 1 – Complete the BLS Instructor Essentials Online course: approximately 1.50 hours. Candidates who successfully complete the course receive access to a printable certificate granting them entrance to the hands-on, faculty-led session.  Part 2 – Complete the in-person Classroom Course with our BLS Training Center Faculty.  This includes hands on evaluation of skills, general knowledge, administration, rules and requirements.  This requirement must be completed within 90 Calendar days from date of completion of Online Essentials course.  Part 3 – Successfully be monitored teaching a course within 6 months of completing the In Person Classroom portion of the Instructor Essentials Course.  Training Center Coordinators may require additional monitoring, if needed.

Continuing Education Credits  EMS Professionals requiring continuing education credits, must submit a written request within 60 days of course completion. Please submit your request by emailing info@citywidecpr.com. The AHA offers continuing medical education (CME) or continuing education (CE) credits for some of its CPR and ECC courses, and CME/CE may also be offered for live events.  Learn more>

Course Completion Card Upon successful completion of all 3 aspects of the AHA BLS Instructor Essentials course, you will earn an AHA BLS Instructor Certification Card, valid for two years..  This will allow you to teach the AHA BLS Provider course, and all Heartsaver level courses.
